Nordic landscape

The Studio

Twenty-Five Years of Material Practice

Light & Space is a Scandinavian textile design studio founded in 2000 by Central Saint Martins graduates. For over two decades, we have been creating designs defined by material awareness, subtle detail, and a strong connection to process and storytelling.

Philosophy

Rooted in Nature

We believe that great design begins with an honest understanding of materials. Our work is shaped by the Nordic landscape — its light, its silence, and its textures — translated into patterns and textiles that carry meaning beyond the surface.

Every project is an opportunity to slow down, to observe, and to create something that earns its place in the world. We are committed to longevity over trend, and to a practice that respects both the maker and the environment.

What Guides Us

Our Principles

Material Honesty

We work exclusively with natural and responsibly sourced fibres. The material informs the design — never the other way around.

Longevity Over Trend

We design for the long term. Our collections are built to be used, loved, and passed on — not discarded after a season.

Process Transparency

From concept to delivery, we document and share our process openly with clients and collaborators to build trust and shared understanding.

How We Work

The Design Process

01

Research

Every project begins with deep observation — walks in landscape, archival study, colour field notes, and material sampling to build a rich contextual foundation.

02

Concept

We develop mood boards, colour palettes, and initial motif sketches that anchor the creative direction before any technical work begins.

03

Design

Hand-drawn and digital work combine as motifs are refined, repeat structures engineered, and colourways developed across the full collection.

04

Production

Final artwork is prepared to production-ready standards — technical files, colour separations, and full specifications delivered to mills and print houses.

The Founders

Twenty-Five Years of Material Practice

From our studio in the Swedish countryside, we work with mills, brands, and independent makers worldwide to bring tactile, considered design into everyday life.

Our practice is shaped by twenty-five years of making — a commitment to craft, to material study, and to design that carries its own quiet authority.
